I'm back in Tanzania - almost 10 years to the month. I'm here working
for the next couple of weeks for the DW Akademie - training radio
And, as much as I would like to be charging around greater eastern and
southern Africa retracing the steps on an epic adventure in '98 in a
bright blue VW beach-buggy, that will have to wait til another time.
But to Richard, the captain of 'Winnie the Millennium Bug' - sorry
mate - you must be envious. It's grand to be back.
On the way into town from the airport I had a quiet chuckle as we
passed the Safari Hotel - still decked out in a drab desert camel
I remember seeing the VW for the first time parked in front of the
Safari Hotel. Richard had kept the make and model of our vehicle as a
surprise. I never expected to spend weeks bouncing around on the road
in a blue plastic bucket. Ah, Winnie, where are you now?
10 years on, one thing I've certainly noticed in Dar es Salaam - the
traffic is diabolical.
